On Writing The War That Winter Is
I'd written around five dragon stories of various sorts, and made mention of dragons in plenty of novels, (Particularly the Flat Earth series) when I was invited to join in on this interesting anthology. My husband (writer-artist John Kaiine) suggested the idea of an ice dragon. This sent me off on a study of cold regions, and of the Inuit Peoples, the influence of both of which researches can be strongly detected in the resultant work. Like everything I do in the way of writing, I enjoyed doing this very much. And as they usually do, characters sprang into my mind at once. They are not, in fact, the Inuit. But still a beleaguered and stalwart race, whose main flaws are their intolerance of difference, and too not recognising the true nature of this hero: one who indeed is created to save them, though hardly in the manner they (understandably) predict.
